The Legend of the Mind Flayer King
Long ago, there was a mind flayer king who ruled over a vast empire in the Underdark. He was the most powerful and cunning of his kind, and he had a secret ambition: to ascend to godhood and become the master of all psionics. He devised a plan to achieve his goal, using his loyal thralls and his vast resources. He ordered his thralls to construct a massive temple in his honor, where he would perform a ritual that would transform him into a god. He also ordered them to gather as many brains as possible from different races and worlds, which he would use as fuel for his ritual.
The mind flayer king’s plan was not unnoticed by the other gods, who feared his potential threat to the balance of the multiverse. They sent their agents and champions to stop him, but they were met with fierce resistance from the mind flayer’s army and his psionic defenses. The mind flayer king was confident that no one could stop him, and he prepared to enact his ritual.
However, he did not anticipate one thing: the betrayal of his own kind. The Elder Brain, the collective consciousness of all mind flayers in his colony, sensed his plan and was displeased. The Elder Brain saw the mind flayer king as a traitor and a usurper, who would disrupt the harmony and unity of the mind flayer race. The Elder Brain decided to act against him, and used its telepathic power to turn some of his thralls against him. The thralls sabotaged the temple, causing it to collapse on the mind flayer king and his followers. The ritual was interrupted, and the mind flayer king’s body was crushed under the rubble.
But that was not the end of him. His psionic essence survived, and he managed to escape into the Astral Plane, a dimension of pure thought and energy. There, he wandered for eons, looking for a way to complete his ritual and achieve his godhood. He encountered many dangers and wonders in the Astral Plane, but he also found allies and enemies among other powerful beings. He learned new secrets and mysteries of psionics, and he grew stronger and more cunning.
He also found a new name for himself: Illithidus, the God-Seeker.

Illithidus is still alive today, searching for a way to return to the material plane and resume his plan. He is feared and revered by some mind flayers, who see him as a hero and a prophet. He is hated and opposed by others, who see him as a villain and a heretic. He is also hunted by some gods, who see him as a threat and a rival. He is ignored by most mortals, who do not know of his existence or his schemes.
But one day, he may find what he is looking for.
And then, the world will tremble before him.
